Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has endorsed Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s ambitious plan to expand Ghana’s railway infrastructure, with a primary focus on a major line connecting Tema to the northern regions. Dr. Bawumia revealed his vision for a comprehensive railway network last week during a campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, highlighting the need for stronger links from Tema through Boankra to the North, as well as extensions to the Western Region.
In a recent interview, President Kufuor praised the proposal as transformative for Ghana’s economic and infrastructure development. “A few days ago, I was listening to him, and he mentioned his plans to prioritise railway development,” Kufuor remarked. “Connecting Tema through Boankra up to the North is essential for opening up the country, especially with our iron deposits. This is very promising and indeed the way forward.”
Kufuor commended Dr. Bawumia’s broader policy focus, highlighting his insights into modern governance as critical to Ghana’s progress. “Dr. Bawumia is well-prepared for the Presidency and has a deep understanding of what it takes to transform a country,” he said. “We need someone with his grasp of global trends, technology, and digitalisation—key drivers in developed nations.”
Kufuor expressed confidence that Bawumia’s railway development plan could fuel economic growth, enhance transport efficiency, and boost industrial opportunities, particularly in northern Ghana. This initiative, he suggested, positions Ghana for significant advancement and reflects a vision for a stronger, more interconnected national economy.
