Mahama Warns of Last-Minute Liabilities by Outgoing Government
President-elect John Dramani Mahama has raised concerns over reports of last-minute mass recruitments and contract signings by the outgoing government, cautioning that such actions could burden the incoming administration with undue liabilities.
Speaking during the inauguration of the joint transition team, Mr. Mahama emphasized the need to address these issues to ensure a smooth and transparent handover of power. He warned that unchecked decisions made in the final days of the outgoing administration could constrain the resources and priorities of the new government.
“There are also reports of last-minute mass recruitments into other agencies, which will be a liability to the new government. That’s something we’ve asked the transitional team to address,” Mr. Mahama stated.
He also expressed concern about certain state-owned enterprises (SOEs) allegedly attempting to sign off contracts just days before the handover, which could tie the hands of the incoming government.
“There are a few signals about contracts some parastatals are trying to sign off at the last minute, committing the new government before it assumes office. It’s something we’ve raised a signal about, and I hope the joint transitional team addresses it,” Mr. Mahama reiterated.
The joint transition team, tasked with facilitating a seamless transfer of power, has assured that all handover notes are prepared and ready. The process is being guided by constitutional protocols to ensure governance continuity.
President-elect Mahama underscored the importance of transparency and cooperation between the outgoing and incoming administrations, stressing that such measures are essential for maintaining public trust and fostering smooth governance.
The formal transition process remains ongoing, with both teams expected to resolve any outstanding concerns amicably to ensure a stable handover of power.
