President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is scheduled to commission the newly completed Flower Pot Interchange in Accra on November 19, 2024. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity across key sections of the capital.
The announcement was made by Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, in a Facebook post confirming the event. Arhin wrote, “Flower Pot Interchange to be commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on 19th November.”
Construction of the interchange, which began in 2017, was handled by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited at a cost of GH¢147 million. The project includes an 802-meter dual-carriageway viaduct over the Accra-Tema Motorway and the Flower Pot Roundabout on Spintex Road. The interchange is designed to streamline travel between northern and southern parts of the motorway, easing commutes for residents in Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema.
The scope of work incorporates a range of features to facilitate smoother movement, including ramps and slip roads. Key additions include a ramp from Shiashie onto the viaduct toward Airport Hills, a ramp leading from the viaduct onto the motorway toward Tema, and a slip road from the motorway to Boundary Road Roundabout. Additionally, the project includes a new road through the old tunnel at East Legon and an exit route to Cantonments from the Giffard Road Interchange.
Expected to significantly reduce congestion, the Flower Pot Interchange will improve travel times and ease traffic for commuters across these high-density areas, making a substantial impact on Accra’s transportation network.
