Kwahuhene Destooled Over Alleged GH₵2M Extortion
The kingmakers of Kwawu Abene in the Kwawu East District of the Eastern Region have unanimously destooled Kwahuhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II, following allegations of extortion. The destoolment ceremony took place on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the Kwahu Palace in Abene, where traditional rites were performed to officially remove him from his position.
The decision came after Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II resigned as the Board Chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) amid accusations of extorting GH₵2 million. According to reports, a businessman and ADB customer, Collins Darkwa, had petitioned the Office of the President, accusing the chief of demanding GH₵50,000 upfront and further financial favors in exchange for the approval of a GH₵12 million loan.
Speaking on behalf of the kingmakers, Nana Asiedu Kwabeng IV declared the Kwahuhene’s position vacant and assured the people of Kwawu that a suitable replacement would be found. “Nananom, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II is no longer the King of Kwawu. We assure you that we will find another formidable replacement for the benefit of all indigenous people in Kwawu,” he said.
The allegations have sparked significant attention, with the businessman claiming he was forced to comply with the chief’s demands under pressure from suppliers. He further appealed to the Presidency for assistance in recovering a total sum of GH₵2,408,000 from the former Board Chairman.
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) also stepped in, directing the chief to resign from his role as ADB Board Chair while investigations into the extortion claims are ongoing.
