UHAS to Be Renamed in Honour of Late President Atta Mills as New Governing Council is Inaugurated

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) is set to be renamed after the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills, as part of a government initiative to honour his lasting legacy in Ghana’s educational and political spheres.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during the official inauguration of the University’s fourth substantive governing council in Accra on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
Describing the decision as a “posthumous honour,” the Minister highlighted President Mills’ significant contributions both as a statesman and an esteemed academic. “This renaming recognises his pivotal role in the establishment of UHAS,” Iddrisu stated. “Accordingly, the institution will, in due course, be officially known as the John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences.”
In addition to the renaming, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing infrastructure in higher education. He assured the university community that ongoing construction projects at the Ho and Hohoe campuses—including the UHAS laboratory complex—will be completed through support from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
Iddrisu further revealed that the Minister for Roads has pledged to initiate work on internal road networks within the university, as part of a nationwide effort to enhance infrastructure across public universities.
The newly inaugurated governing council, led by Professor Kodzo Gavua as Chairman, will oversee the university’s next phase of development. In his address, Professor Gavua expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, the Education Ministry, and the government for the trust placed in the council. He praised UHAS as a lasting achievement of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration and committed to addressing the university’s ongoing challenges through collaborative leadership.
The inauguration of the new council marks a pivotal moment for UHAS, which continues to distinguish itself as Ghana’s sole state university dedicated exclusively to the training of healthcare professionals, earning growing recognition for its research and community outreach efforts.
