In a thrilling finale at the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Mfantsipim School clinched their third NSMQ trophy in a nail-biting contest against fierce rivals, St. Augustine’s College and Keta Senior High School. The final showdown left audiences on the edge of their seats, with Mfantsipim, affectionately known as BOTWE, staging a comeback that many have called nothing short of miraculous.
The intense battle saw St. Augustine’s College (AUGUSCO) leading the contest into the fifth and final round, holding a one-point advantage over BOTWE. However, the dynamics changed dramatically when Mfantsipim correctly answered the penultimate riddle question, taking the lead by a single point. This last-minute breakthrough catapulted them to the top, where they held their ground until the contest concluded.
When the dust settled, Mfantsipim had accumulated a total of 47 points, narrowly edging out St. Augustine’s College, who finished with 46 points. Keta Senior High School (KETASCO) managed to score 32 points after answering two crucial riddle questions in the final round, bolstering their tally from 27 points and claiming third place in the contest.
Adding to their triumph, Mfantsipim was awarded a special GHC10,000 prize, sponsored by Pepsodent, for earning the highest score of the day. This victory marks BOTWE’s third NSMQ championship, with previous wins in 1999 and 2014, and runner-up finishes in 2000 and 2016, proving their consistency as NSMQ contenders.
AUGUSCO had hoped to clinch their own third title after victories in 2007 and 2019, while KETASCO entered as the reigning Volta-Oti Zonal champions, previously making two NSMQ finals appearances and advancing to the semi-finals in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023.
The competition was an unforgettable experience, particularly for BOTWE supporters who witnessed their team’s spectacular comeback, underscoring Mfantsipim’s reputation for resilience and skill in the NSMQ arena.
