President Akufo-Addo Commissions Forward Operating Base at Ezinlibo to Enhance Maritime Security

In a significant step toward safeguarding Ghana’s territorial waters and bolstering national security, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned the Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Ezinlibo in the Western Region on Monday, December 23, 2024.

The state-of-the-art facility reflects the government’s dedication to strengthening defense infrastructure and protecting the nation’s vital economic assets, particularly in the maritime domain.

A Promise Fulfilled

Speaking at the commissioning, President Akufo-Addo recalled a commitment made in 2018 to equip the Ghana Armed Forces with the tools needed to address modern security challenges.

“Today’s commissioning marks the realization of that pledge,” the President declared, praising the Ministry of Defence, led by Hon. Dominic Nitiwul and his deputy Hon. Kofi Amankwa Manu, for their role in bringing this vision to life.

Strategic Role of the Ezinlibo FOB

The Ezinlibo FOB is part of a growing network of military bases across Ghana, including facilities at Tilli, Bui, Sankore, and Kenyase, with plans for additional bases at Keta, Ada, Winneba, and Elmina. The base is strategically positioned to combat piracy, illegal fishing, and transnational crimes, which pose significant threats in the Gulf of Guinea.

“This facility symbolizes progress, security, and national resolve,” President Akufo-Addo said. “It enables the Navy to act swiftly and effectively in protecting our maritime interests and securing vital resources like offshore oil and gas.”

The FOB will also serve as a logistics hub, enhancing operational readiness and facilitating training for the Navy, while contributing to regional security cooperation and economic stability.

Timely Response to Evolving Threats

The commissioning of the Ezinlibo base is seen as a critical response to growing security concerns in the Gulf of Guinea. It equips the Ghana Navy with advanced tools to monitor the nation’s offshore resources and to collaborate effectively with neighboring countries in addressing shared security challenges.

A Unified Effort

President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to the Western Nzema Traditional Council, led by Paramount Chief Awulae Annor Adjaye III, for providing the land for the project. “Your selfless contribution is a testament to your commitment to national development,” he remarked.

He also lauded the Ghana Armed Forces for their tireless efforts to maintain peace and security, affirming his pride in their service. The President further commended the contractors and consultants for delivering the project on time and to high standards, saying, “Ayekoo! Your excellence has made this possible.”

Looking Ahead

As Ghana prepares to establish additional FOBs, the Ezinlibo facility represents a milestone in modernizing the nation’s defense capabilities. President Akufo-Addo called on Ghanaians to unite in patriotism and hard work to ensure a safe and prosperous future.

“The commissioning of this base strengthens our resolve to protect our maritime resources and reaffirms the government’s commitment to the Armed Forces and national security,” the President concluded.

The ceremony ended with a prayer for Ghana’s continued peace and development, marking another chapter in the nation’s efforts to meet evolving security challenges head-on.
