Armed Robber Sentenced to Life Imprisonment and 120 Years for Killing Pharmacist in Kumasi

A Kumasi High Court has handed down a life sentence to Dominic Afriyie, also known as GH, a notorious armed robber, for the murder of a 43-year-old pharmacist and building contractor, Michael Dela Agbo Klu. Afriyie also received an additional 120 years with hard labour for two counts of robbery.

The sentencing follows Afriyie’s conviction for a violent attack at the victim’s residence in Atasemanso, Kumasi, in November 2021. The presiding judge, His Honour Abdul Razak, together with a seven-member jury, found the 36-year-old guilty after a full trial, despite his plea of not guilty to all charges.

On the night of November 20, 2021, Afriyie broke into Mr. Klu’s home at gunpoint. He made away with two mobile phones, an ASUS Zenbook laptop, and GH¢1,500 in cash. During the robbery, he fatally shot Mr. Klu in front of his family.

Weeks later, on December 30, 2021, police received intelligence about a planned robbery in the same area. A surveillance operation was launched, leading to Afriyie’s arrest alongside three accomplices at 2:20 a.m. on December 31. They were intercepted in a Toyota Corolla with registration number AS 5970-20. Police recovered two pistols and two single-barrelled shotguns from the vehicle.

Subsequent investigations, however, confirmed that Afriyie acted alone in the robbery and murder of Mr. Klu.

The verdict and sentencing bring a measure of justice and closure to a case that deeply shocked the Atasemanso community and drew widespread public condemnation.
