Attempts to Remove Chief Justice Are Premeditated – Oppong Nkrumah

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, has described the current efforts to remove the Chief Justice as politically motivated and carefully orchestrated.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Thursday, May 29, Oppong Nkrumah argued that the matter is driven more by political interests than by legal principles.
“I believe she will stand up for her rights during this process, but let’s be honest—this is not about the law; it’s about politics,” he asserted.
He pushed back against those framing the process as a straightforward constitutional matter under Articles 146 or 147 of the Constitution.
“Anyone who claims this is just a matter of Article 146 or 147 is either complicit or being naive. Everyone can see this is politically driven,” he said.
Oppong Nkrumah further alleged that the attempt to remove the Chief Justice was not spontaneous but had been planned in advance.
“This was premeditated, preannounced, and even preadvertised,” he emphasized.
To support his claim, he referenced past remarks by then-opposition leader and current President John Mahama, suggesting that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) intended to reshape the judiciary if they returned to power.
“There are video clips of now-President Mahama stating clearly that the NDC planned to appoint more of their people to the bench because they believed the judiciary wasn’t in their favor,” he noted.
Oppong Nkrumah also accused members of the NDC, while in opposition, of attacking the judiciary and undermining the credibility of the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice.
“They extensively discredited the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court during their time in opposition,” he added.
