In the early hours of Tuesday, March 7, 2023, military men invaded Ashaiman, a suburb of Accra, over the alleged murder of their colleague over the weekend.
It was reported over the weekend that a 21-year-old soldier was stabbed to death by some civilians in the area. This incident triggered some military men in the wee hours of Tuesday while the rain was pouring, and they started meting out harsh punishment to residents in the area.
Locals were left in a state of fear Tuesday over the development, forcing them to stay indoors to avoid being brutalized.There were people who sustained various forms of injury as a result of the harsh punishment meted out to them by the military.
The military has however been praised by some sections for their brutality, for sending a stern warning to the residents of Ashaiman about their readiness to defend themselves, and for instilling a sense of discipline in them.
At least 40 individuals have been picked up by the military in connection with the murder in Ashaiman, the assemblyman for Naa Amui electoral in Ashaiman, Shadrack Tetteh, has said.
“About 40 to 50 people have been arrested by the military so far,” Tetteh said. “We don’t know their whereabouts.”
