Rejoinder: Kwahuhene Destooled Over Alleged GH₵2M Extortion

In a statement dated Saturday, October 19, 2024, the Office of the Kwahumanhene has refuted circulating claims suggesting the destoolment of the paramount chief, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II. Signed by Nana J.K. Boadi, the statement described the video footage claiming to depict a destoolment process as “false” and an affront to both legal standards and Kwahu customs.

The statement emphasized that “no formal charges have ever been brought against the Kwahuhene that would warrant a destoolment process,” and further clarified that Daasebre Agyapong has not been found guilty of any misconduct related to his role as Chairman of the Board of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB).

The controversy comes in the wake of Daasebre Agyapong’s resignation from his position as ADB Board Chairman on Friday, October 11, 2024. His resignation followed a directive from the Bank of Ghana (BoG), triggered by a petition from a bank client, Collins Darkwa Aboagye, who sought presidential intervention to retrieve GH¢2.406 million owed to him. The BoG maintained that Daasebre Agyapong’s continued role as a director of the bank was unsustainable due to the reputational damage caused by the incident.

However, the Kwahuhene’s office raised concerns about the process leading to his resignation, noting that the Banking Supervision Division of the BoG issued the directive without giving Daasebre Agyapong the opportunity to respond to the allegations. The statement highlighted that the Kwahuhene voluntarily stepped down to allow for a fair resolution of the issue.

Despite this, the office expressed confusion over a video circulating on social media, falsely suggesting Daasebre Agyapong’s destoolment. The office reiterated that the video is entirely fabricated, and no such action has been taken against the Kwahumanhene.

The office urged the public to disregard the misleading footage and called for an end to the spread of false information regarding the paramount chief’s status.
