Security Tightened in Parliament for Tuesday’s Session; Public Barred from Gallery

In a bid to enhance security during parliamentary proceedings, Parliament has announced stricter protocols for the upcoming session on Tuesday. These measures aim to ensure the safety of Speaker Alban S.K. Bagbin, Members of Parliament (MPs), and parliamentary staff, according to a statement issued by the Deputy Marshall of Parliament, WG CDR Frederick Bawa (Rtd).

The statement, dated Monday, October 21, outlined several key adjustments to the security arrangements. It emphasized that all MPs, parliamentary staff, and members of the press will be required to undergo thorough screening before being granted entry into the Chamber. This procedure is part of a broader effort to fortify the security system within Parliament, ensuring that everyone entering the premises is adequately vetted.

Additionally, bodyguards accompanying MPs will not be allowed inside the Chamber. To further bolster security outside the parliamentary complex, parking restrictions will be strictly enforced, especially around the Grand Arena. Only vehicles authorized to park in designated zones will be permitted access, reducing congestion and enhancing the overall security perimeter.

VIPs attending the session will also be required to follow specific guidelines, including using designated drop-off points at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). The Ghana Police Service will be on-site to manage traffic flow and assist with drop-offs, ensuring smooth and secure access to the parliamentary precincts.

Furthermore, MPs have been instructed to wear their parliamentary identification tags at all times to facilitate easy identification by security personnel. Access to the Chamber will commence at 08:00 hours, allowing ample time for security checks to be completed before the day’s proceedings begin.

The statement also made clear that the public would not be allowed into the gallery during the session. These changes, according to the statement, are crucial to maintaining a secure and orderly environment in Parliament during Tuesday’s sitting.
