Transport fares increase in Western Region

Starting today, April 11, 2023, commuters will notice changes in fare prices across various routes. Notably, the fare from Takoradi to Kwei-Kuma has seen an increase from GH₵6.00 to GH₵7.20 pesewas. Likewise, the journey from Takoradi to Accra now stands at GH₵78, up from GH₵65.

In a parallel adjustment, the fare from Agona-Nkwanta to Akwaada has climbed to GH₵18 from its previous rate of GH₵15. Additionally, the route from Sekondi to Takoradi now commands GH₵6, marking a rise from GH₵5.

A regional executive member of the GPRTU, preferring anonymity in their conversation with the Daily Graphic in Takoradi, clarified that this fare adjustment isn’t exclusive to the Western Region. Reports indicate similar changes being implemented in other regions. The decision to increase fares is primarily linked to the rising costs of fuel, spare parts, and other operational necessities. The GPRTU official encourages passengers to report any instances of unauthorized fare charges by drivers to the union.
