Africa Union Day: African Diplomatic Corps Urges Leaders to Prioritise Peace, Unity, and Cooperation

On the occasion of Africa Day, the Dean of the Group of African Ambassadors in Ghana and Ambassador of the Royal Kingdom of Morocco, Imane Ouaadil, has called on African leaders to place unity, peace, and cooperation at the forefront of their agenda. She emphasised that these values are essential for fostering development and securing a brighter future for the continent.
Speaking at a Flag Raising Ceremony organised by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra to mark the African Union (AU) Day, observed annually on May 25, Ms Ouaadil underscored the importance of building an environment conducive to progress. She noted that the continent is rich in both human and natural resources, which, if properly harnessed, can eliminate poverty and unlock widespread opportunities.
“This commitment to unity and cooperation,” she said, “will pave the way for a peaceful and prosperous Africa, especially for the youth who are actively seeking opportunities.”
Highlighting the importance of creating inclusive and stable conditions, she urged African governments to work together in realising the continent’s full potential.
Also speaking at the event, Mr George noted that this year’s commemoration comes amid significant challenges, including economic hardship, climate change, conflict, and governance issues. Nevertheless, he urged that Africa must not lose sight of its achievements.
He pointed to major milestones such as the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), headquartered in Accra, and applauded the continent’s collective efforts in combatting pandemics and terrorism. These successes, he said, reflect Africa’s resilience and ability to generate home-grown solutions.
Mr George further called on African nations to deepen regional integration, uphold democratic principles, and invest in their youth. “Young people are not just the future of Africa—they are its present,” he stressed, encouraging leaders to empower them to drive the continent forward.
