Bank of Ghana to Celebrate Cedi@60 on July 19, 2025

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced plans to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Ghana Cedi on July 19, 2025. This milestone marks six decades since the cedi replaced the Ghanaian Pound in 1965, becoming the country’s sole legal tender.
In a statement issued on May 13, the central bank emphasized the significance of the cedi as a symbol of Ghana’s economic independence and development. “Over the past 60 years, the cedi has undergone various transformations in both form and policy to meet the evolving needs of the Ghanaian economy,” the statement noted. “These changes reflect Ghana’s resilience, innovation, and commitment to economic stability.”
To honor the anniversary, the BoG has outlined a series of commemorative events and activities scheduled from July through December 2025. These include official launch ceremonies, nationwide exhibitions, educational initiatives, and stakeholder forums aimed at engaging the public on the history and future of the national currency.
The Bank described the celebration as an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the legacy of the cedi and to renew their commitment to preserving its value. “Beyond its role as a medium of exchange, the cedi embodies our national pride, cultural heritage, and collective aspirations for economic prosperity,” the BoG stated.
Inviting all Ghanaians, institutions, stakeholders, and development partners to join the celebration, the Bank affirmed its continued dedication to maintaining a stable currency and promoting overall price stability.
