Bawumia Urges Respect for Due Process in Chairman Wontumi’s Arrest

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to uphold the constitutional rights of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following his arrest on Tuesday.

In a statement shared on Facebook on May 28, 2025, Dr. Bawumia expressed serious concern over the detention of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, particularly as the reasons for his arrest remain unclear and his current location undisclosed.

“No Ghanaian, regardless of political affiliation or social status, should be denied their constitutional rights,” Dr. Bawumia said, stressing the importance of justice and adherence to due process.

Chairman Wontumi was apprehended by EOCO officials on May 27, shortly after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra. He had previously been granted bail after being cautioned by police in connection with alleged illegal mining activities in a forest reserve.

According to Henry Nana Boakye, National Organiser of the NPP, EOCO operatives intercepted Mr. Antwi-Boasiako’s vehicle as he exited the CID premises and took him into custody. As of Tuesday evening, his legal representatives had reportedly been denied access to him, and the grounds for his arrest remained undisclosed.

Dr. Bawumia confirmed he had engaged with the politician’s legal team to ensure his rights were safeguarded. He commended the team for their professional conduct and urged EOCO and all relevant authorities to act within the bounds of the law.

Mr. Antwi-Boasiako had voluntarily reported to the CID Headquarters on Monday, May 26, accompanied by his legal counsel, including former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame. He submitted a formal statement and was granted bail with instructions to return for further questioning the next day.

Chairman Wontumi has denied any involvement in illegal mining activities, maintaining that all his operations are lawful and fully compliant with regulations.
