Finance Minister Credits Cedi Stability to Strategic Economic Measures

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, has credited the recent strengthening of the cedi to deliberate and sustained economic planning, dismissing suggestions that the improvement is a short-term market response.

Speaking during a meeting with the Food and Beverage Association of Ghana, Forson emphasized that the cedi’s recent appreciation reflects long-term fiscal strategies rather than temporary external factors. “We implemented calculated measures to achieve this stability, and these gains will be sustained,” he stated, highlighting structured interventions aimed at economic resilience.

The cedi has seen a notable recovery, strengthening from GH¢16 to GH¢13.29 per US dollar on the interbank market. Forson cited this progress as proof of sound economic management, reaffirming the government’s commitment to currency stability, inflation control, and job creation.

He called on businesses to reflect the improving macroeconomic indicators in their pricing strategies to ensure that consumers benefit from the positive trend.

This message comes amid Ghana’s continued progress under its International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. The recent staff-level agreement for the disbursement of $370 million in financial support marks another milestone in efforts to restore economic balance and boost investor confidence.

While global factors, such as improved commodity prices, have supported the cedi’s gains, economic analysts point to disciplined fiscal policies as the core driver of the recovery. However, they caution that the true impact will depend on how well these gains translate into reduced costs and better living conditions for Ghanaians.

Sustained cedi stability could help lower import costs and moderate inflation, but experts note that continued policy discipline and favorable external conditions will be crucial as the country advances its debt restructuring and broader economic reforms.
