Fourteen Suspects Remanded for Illegal Mining at Akyem Muoso

Fourteen individuals have been remanded into prison custody for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities at Akyem Muoso in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The suspects were arrested by the Eastern South Regional Police Command on May 15, 2025, during a targeted operation against unauthorised mining in the area.
A statement from the Ghana Police Service confirmed that the accused appeared before the Koforidua Circuit Court B on May 16, 2025. During the hearing, each suspect was granted bail set at GH¢350,000, with two sureties—one of whom must be justified with movable property.
As part of the operation, police recovered a pump-action gun from one of the suspects, Zuberu Nuhoho, who was unable to produce valid documentation for the weapon. Authorities also retrieved two excavator control boards from the mining site.
Police say investigations are ongoing as part of wider efforts to combat illegal mining and its associated crimes in the region.
