Government Plans to Establish New Public University in Kintampo

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced plans by the government to establish a new public university in Kintampo, located in the Bono East Region. The institution will specialize in health, agriculture, and life sciences, and aims to serve the educational and developmental needs of the broader Bono Region.

The new university, once established, will play a pivotal role in advancing Ghana’s national goals for agricultural development and food security. The initiative reflects the government’s broader commitment to regional equity in access to higher education.

Mr. Iddrisu made the announcement during the inauguration of the Governing Council of the S.D. Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies in Wa. He revealed that the Ministry of Education is finalizing a bill to be submitted to Parliament, which will provide the legal foundation for the University of Health, Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The proposed university will focus on fostering innovation in agriculture, supporting rural development, and advancing life sciences — all geared toward promoting sustainable development in Ghana.

Reaffirming the President’s vision, the Education Minister emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring that all 16 regions of Ghana host at least one public university.

“It is the desire of the government that every region of Ghana will be host to one higher education institution of learning. It is the dream and desire of President Mahama that in each region there will be an established university, but we have to begin somewhere, and we have begun somewhat in getting that done,” he said.
