Interior Minister Calls on NIA Board to Bolster National ID System for All Ghanaians

Ghana’s Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has officially inaugurated a newly reconstituted Governing Board for the National Identification Authority (NIA), charging the team with the responsibility of strengthening the country’s national identification system to ensure it is secure, inclusive, and reliable.

The 10-member board is chaired by Mr. Moses Afetsi Positive and comprises distinguished professionals, including Dr. Gifty Seiwaa Nyarkoo, Mr. Eric Coffie, and Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu. At the swearing-in ceremony held on Thursday, May 8, the minister highlighted the board’s pivotal role in advancing the NIA’s mandate, which he described as essential to Ghana’s national security and socio economic development.

In a statement shared on Facebook after the event, Alhaji Mubarak expressed confidence in the board’s capability to guide the NIA in enhancing identity management systems. He underscored the need for improved efficiency and wider accessibility in delivering identification services, especially as Ghana deepens its digital transformation across public service sectors.

Board Chairman Positive reiterated the board’s commitment to transparency and collaboration. He pledged to work diligently with stakeholders to fulfill the NIA’s objectives, providing strategic oversight to enhance service delivery and ensure equity in access to identification.

The formation of the new board comes as Ghana accelerates the integration of digital identity systems into governance, financial services, and public administration. A robust national ID system is regarded as critical for curbing fraud, streamlining public services, and promoting inclusive development.

With renewed leadership, the NIA aims to address persistent challenges such as registration bottlenecks and limited accessibility in rural communities. As digital identity becomes an increasingly vital component of modern governance, the success of the newly appointed board will be instrumental in shaping Ghana’s future as a secure and digitally empowered nation.
