Mahama Unveils Plans for New City to Address Accra’s Congestion

Former President John Mahama has revealed plans to develop a new city to help reduce congestion in Ghana’s capital, Accra. The proposed city, which will serve as an administrative and commercial hub, is aimed at easing the mounting pressure on the capital caused by rapid urbanisation and infrastructure challenges.
The announcement was made during a meeting with the European Union Ambassador and the EU Chamber of Commerce on May 28, 2024, as part of the build-up to the 2024 elections. According to Mahama, the new city will be located outside the Greater Accra Region and will house selected government ministries and agencies.
During his Thank You tour in Dodowa, President Mahama emphasized the urgency of the initiative, stating, “Accra is overstretched. The capital is facing mounting pressure from rapid urbanisation, traffic congestion, and inadequate infrastructure. It is time we think long-term and plan for a new city that can ease this burden.”
The new city will be equipped with modern infrastructure, including a dedicated expressway and railway line connecting it directly to Accra. Mahama highlighted that beyond easing congestion, the project will boost economic growth, attract investment, and create new housing opportunities.
The initiative forms a central part of Mahama’s vision for sustainable urban development and improved governance efficiency.
