Minister Cautions Against Politicizing Bawku Conflict Amid Rising Tensions

The Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has issued a stern warning to the factions involved in the ongoing Bawku conflict, urging them to avoid politicizing the sensitive matter and focus on peaceful resolution.

This plea follows the recent killing of 16 people amid escalating violence in Bawku. The latest unrest was reportedly sparked by the return of Seidu Abagre to Bawku on October 24, after his controversial enskinment as Bawku Naba in February 2023. Although Abagre’s title lacks formal legal recognition, his presence has deepened the divide between opposing factions, triggering multiple violent clashes in the area.

At a press briefing held on Tuesday, Mr. Asamoah Boateng addressed the ongoing crisis, appealing to all parties involved to work toward resolution rather than fueling blame games or political narratives. He underscored the need for calm, noting that government officials have observed rising misinterpretations among the factions that seem to be worsening the situation. Acknowledging the growing mistrust that has emerged in recent days, he assured all parties that the government remains committed to an impartial approach to resolving the crisis.

“Government is guided by its responsibility to protect lives and property and above all to enforce law and order to restore normalcy as quickly as possible,” Mr. Asamoah Boateng stated. “We will continue listening and acting impartially to bring peace to Bawku and its surrounding areas. No one should play politics with this sensitive matter.”

The Minister called upon local traditional leaders in Bawku to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions further. He also announced that a team of esteemed Chiefs, led by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu, will soon begin mediating efforts to bring a lasting peace to the troubled region.

As the government renews its commitment to finding a peaceful resolution, Mr. Asamoah Boateng assured residents of Bawku that the administration is actively working across political divides to address the root causes of the conflict. He emphasized the importance of trust in governmental efforts to restore harmony and encouraged all stakeholders to cooperate in the peace process.

The Minister’s call for unity and a depoliticized approach to the crisis reflects the government’s determination to bring stability to Bawku and protect lives amid ongoing conflict.
