NADMO Confirms No Deaths from Sunday’s Torrential Rains in Accra

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that no lives were lost following the heavy downpour that struck parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18.

Speaking to Channel One TV, Chief Disaster Control Officer Mohammed Jafaro revealed that NADMO received numerous distress calls from residents in flood-affected areas, including Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie. In response, the agency swiftly deployed emergency teams to assist residents and assess the situation on the ground.

“We’ve had several distress calls from areas like Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie, which prompted our rapid response. Fortunately, as of now, there are no reported casualties,” Mr. Jafaro stated.

He pointed to long-standing infrastructural challenges as a major cause of the flooding. Poor drainage systems, inadequate sanitation, and structural issues in some communities have worsened the impact of heavy rains, he noted.

“In many areas, there’s either no drainage or the drains are choked with waste. Some communities also suffer from engineering defects,” Mr. Jafaro explained.

NADMO is urging the public to remain cautious during periods of intense rainfall and avoid flood-prone areas to protect lives and property.
