Wenchi’s Busia Family Launches Diabetes Research Foundation in Honour of Nana Amma Busia

The family of the late Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia, former Prime Minister of Ghana (1969–1972), has established the Amma Busia Memorial Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing research and healthcare efforts targeting diabetes—a growing non-communicable disease in Ghana.

The foundation was officially launched in Wenchi, Bono Region, during a solemn ceremony marking the one-year anniversary of the passing of Nana Amma Serwaa Busia, a distinguished stateswoman and daughter of Dr. Busia. She died in 2024 at the age of 87.

Speaking at the event, Madam Tina Nana Afia Achaa Ofori-Atta, Solicitor of the Foundation, highlighted its mission to promote diabetes research, improve disease management, and support the training of medical professionals to combat the condition. She described the initiative as a continuation of Nana Amma Busia’s vision to strengthen healthcare delivery, particularly in the Bono Region.

“The foundation is not only a tribute to the legacy of the late Nana Amma Busia but also a commitment to improving health outcomes and empowering communities,” Madam Ofori-Atta said. “Our focus extends beyond diabetes to include support for the underprivileged, vulnerable children, and youth in pursuit of academic excellence.”

She added that early detection, prevention, and education would form the core of the foundation’s activities, with outreach programmes designed to encourage healthy lifestyles and self-management of chronic conditions.

The foundation is collaborating with key local partners, including the Wenchi Methodist Hospital and the Wenchi Municipal Education Directorate, to deliver its health and education initiatives effectively.

Mr. Akwasi Agyemang Busia, a representative of the Busia family, emphasized that the foundation embodies Nana Amma Busia’s enduring legacy and her lifelong commitment to public service and community well-being.

Through research, education, and targeted interventions, the Amma Busia Memorial Foundation aims to make a lasting impact in the fight against diabetes and other non-communicable diseases in Ghana.
