FDA Seizes Large Haul of Illegal Tobacco Products in Accra

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has confiscated significant quantities of unregistered and illegal tobacco products during a targeted enforcement exercise in Accra.

The operation, carried out with support from two police officers, uncovered various contraband items across four active facilities. These included 15 brands of unauthorized shisha (waterpipe) flavours, three illicit cigarette brands, seven types of nitrous oxide canisters, 21 unregistered vape brands, 10 illegal cigar brands, and four unauthorized tobacco wraps.

The enforcement activity is part of initiatives leading up to World No Tobacco Day, observed annually on May 31. The FDA team inspected six locations in Kwabenya, East Legon, Abeka, Fadama, Tabora, and Achimota — two of which were closed during the time of the visit.

Jemima Odonkor, Head of the FDA’s Tobacco Products Department, emphasized that the operation aligns with the Authority’s broader mission to eliminate unapproved and harmful tobacco products from the market.

“These products entered the country through unapproved channels. The FDA will pursue all necessary legal and regulatory actions against those involved in their distribution and sale,” she stated.

She reaffirmed the FDA’s dedication to safeguarding public health and reducing the accessibility of harmful tobacco substances. Ms. Odonkor also announced plans to ramp up public education efforts, particularly in schools.

“We’ll be visiting schools to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use, aiming to protect young people from exposure to illicit substances,” she added.

The FDA is encouraging the public to stay alert and report any suspicious tobacco-related products or activities.
