Volta Region Pursues Agricultural Investment: Chief Tanko Leads Initiative

In a strategic move to boost the agricultural sector in the Volta Region, Gabriel Kwamigah Atople—widely known as Chief Tanko and the Region’s representative on the Council of State—has initiated a tour of key farming communities to explore potential investment opportunities.
Over the weekend, Chief Tanko led a delegation through several towns including Weta, Afife, Avalavi, Atiteti, and other surrounding areas renowned for rice and sugarcane production. The purpose of the visit was to assess opportunities that could generate jobs, particularly for the youth, and stimulate sustainable economic growth.
As a successful rice farmer himself, Chief Tanko emphasized the importance of tapping into the region’s rich agricultural resources. He noted that while the communities have fertile lands and dedicated farmers, they face critical challenges such as post-harvest losses and lack of access to modern equipment and processing facilities.
Chief Tanko highlighted the urgent need for agricultural infrastructure investment. “The communities are blessed with fertile land and hardworking farmers, but face challenges such as post-harvest losses due to limited access to modern equipment and processing facilities,” he wrote.
During the tour, Chief Tanko engaged local farmers and stakeholders in discussions on supporting the development of rice milling facilities, sugar processing factories, and the acquisition of modern machinery such as the Kasette Phattana brand combined harvester. He also pointed to the untapped potential of expanding fish farming in the Region as part of a diversified agricultural strategy.
“With the right support, we can improve efficiency, reduce waste, cut down on import dependency, and most importantly, create sustainable jobs for the youth,” he stated.
Chief Tanko reaffirmed his commitment to agriculture as a pillar of regional and national development. “Agriculture plays a vital role in our economy, and by strategically investing and working in tandem, we can turn it into a strong driver of growth and opportunity for everyone,” he concluded.
