AMA Boss Engages Hawkers Ahead of Major Decongestion Exercise

The Mayor of Accra and Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has begun direct consultations with street hawkers in the Central Business District (CBD) as the Assembly prepares to launch a major decongestion operation on Tuesday, May 20.
The planned exercise is part of a wider initiative to restore order and improve sanitation in the capital.
Joined by the Municipal Chief Executive for Korle Klottey, Mr. Allotey toured key trading hubs on Saturday, including Kinbu Road, Kojo Thompson Road, Sempe Road, Kantamanto, and other heavily congested areas identified for the operation.
Speaking to traders, he appealed for their cooperation in maintaining a clean and organized city.
“I urge all of you to support our efforts to clean up the city and bring back order. We all desire a better, more organised Accra, and your cooperation is essential in making this a reality,” he said.
Mr. Allotey also highlighted the government’s upcoming 24-hour economy policy, which he said would eventually create new opportunities for hawkers to operate at night. “In the meantime, I kindly ask that you vacate the pavements to enable us to carry out this important cleanup exercise,” he added.
